I TEAM: growing investigation into sex assault at one of Cleveland’s finest hotels

CLEVELAND - The FOX 8 I TEAM has learned a man is facing charges for creeping into a downtown hotel and sexually assaulting a woman as she slept. And police say the same suspect could be tied to more sex crimes.

Cleveland Sex Crimes investigators and Cuyahoga County Prosecutors have indicted Aaron Dandridge-Halsey.

Investigators say he somehow got into a room in the middle of the night at the Renaissance Hotel, and sexually assaulted a woman he didn’t know.

We asked a manager how the man was able to get into the room, and he told us investigators were not able to determine that.

However, a court record shows, the man entered a hotel room with a “door slightly open.”

Meantime, a police report shows the attacker scrambled away when the woman started waking up.

Police say a break in the case came from what the suspect left in the bathroom of that hotel room. He left behind a jacket, hat, and wrist band. Investigators found DNA on the clothing, and they saw a suspect wearing it when they looked back on hotel security video.

The hotel sex assault happened in May. But Aaron Dandridge-Halsey was just indicted for that, plus a rape in April outside a bar in the Warehouse District. And a court record shows the same suspect under investigation for more sex crimes.

Back at the hotel, manager Ed Sylcox said, "Anybody can pretty much come through the front door to the hotel. We have 24-7 security. Security guards on at all times." He added, "I think anybody staying at a hotel should just want to make sure their night-latch is on, their door is shut, and every single door clicks."
