Publicist: Well-known TV producer, director Garry Marshall dead at 81

LOS ANGELES — “Happy Days” creator and “Pretty Woman” director Garry Marshall has passed away at 81, according to his publicist.

Marshall was a legendary TV and film producer and writer known for shows like “Mork and Mindy,” “Happy Days,” “Laverne & Shirley,” as well as films including, “Pretty Woman,” “Beaches” and “Runaway Bride.”

Family members also confirmed Marshall’s death to Variety, CBS News, and Access Hollywood.

The New York native was born Garry Kent Maschiarelli on Nov. 13, 1934, according to the website IMDB.

Marshall’s sister, actress Penny Marshall, starred as Laverne DeFazio in Laverne & Shirley.”

Other well-known TV shows Marshall worked on included: “Angie,” “Love, American Style, “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” “The Odd Couple” and “Gomer Pyle: USMC.”

Henry Winkler, who played Arthur Fonzarelli on “Happy Days,” tweeted a message about Marshall shortly after news of his death was released.
