NEW YORK – Authorities say a teenage tourist lost his foot when a small blast went off in Central Park Sunday.
Fox 8’s sister station, WPIX, reports that the blast happened shortly before 11 a.m., inside the park at 60th Street and Fifth Avenue.
Three teenage tourists — 18, 18 and 20 — were walking in the park when they came upon a package. When one of the 18-year-olds stepped on it, it exploded.
That teen lost his foot in the blast and was taken to a hospital, police said. No other injuries were reported.
It’s not clear what caused the blast. Police say fireworks may be to blame, but are not ruling out the possibility of another type of explosive device.
Dozens of witnesses reported hearing a loud boom near the scene.
A bomb squad was also called on the site.
