ERIE COUNTY, Ohio — Erie County Sheriff’s deputies have called the bomb squad for assistance after a teen suffered serious injuries playing with what appears to commercial fireworks.

Sheriff Paul Sigsworth says two teenagers were in a car on state route 2 around 10 a.m. when one of the fireworks exploded seriously injuring one of the teen’s hands.

“They drove to the Milan fire station for help,” Sigsworth said.

He said the teen was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Toledo.

“We don’t know exactly what these are, they appear to be commercial fireworks, but we know how dangerous they are so we called the bomb squad,” he said. “Fireworks are nothing to play with.”

The bomb squad will detonate the devices.

No charges have been filed. The matter remains under investigation.
