AKRON, Ohio -- The Akron Zoo's snow leopard triplets have chosen their own new names.

The zoo took 6,710 submissions in their naming contest and narrowed them all down to six.

Thursday the cubs picked the names Altai, Asha and Layan. Altai means "golden," Asha means "hope," and Layan means "soft" or "gentle."

They'll be on display now with their mother, Shanti.

Shanti gave birth to the triplets on March 5. This is the first litter of three snow leopards in the zoo’s history.

The cubs weighed just 1 pound when they were born. At four weeks old, they are now up to 4 pounds and starting to become mobile.
