AMITE CITY, Louisiana – Andrew Jones is not only a star athlete, but also valedictorian of his graduating class.
But because Jones had a beard, he wasn’t allowed to walk at his high school graduation.
“Our school board has a policy that does not allow any facial hair on male students,” Tangipahoa Parish school superintendent Mark Kolwe told ABC News.
Officials say they asked Jones and several other students to go home and shave before the ceremony. Other students did, but Jones did not. He has had the beard throughout the school year.
Superintendent Mark Kolwe said he didn’t have a choice about enforcing the rule. He would not comment about why the rule was not enforced throughout the entire school year though, but added that the “principal was attempting to enforce the policy for graduation purposes.”
