PAINESVILLE, Ohio- Painesville police are investigating a report of a puppy being thrown out of a sixth floor apartment window this morning.

Shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday, police were called to the Washington Square Apartments on Washington St. for a deceased animal complaint.

When officers arrived, they were told by the building staff a deceased puppy was located in the trash compactor.

Officers were able to identify the owner, who they said later confessed that he killed the dog by throwing it out the window.

Officials told FOX 8's Peggy Gallek the puppy was roughly 3 months old and weighed 15-16 pounds. The puppy was purchased as a Mother's Day gift for the suspect's mother.

The 23-year-old Painesville resident was arrested and taken to the Lake County Jail, where he is being held on a $500.00 bond.

He is scheduled to be in court tomorrow morning.

The Lake County Humane Society was called to the scene and took custody of the dog. An autopsy will be completed to determine the cause of death.
