ERIE, PA. - Officials at the Erie County Jail say Kyle Johnson was found unresponsive in his jail cell just after 3 p.m. Sunday.

Major Gary Seymour with the Erie County Prison told Fox 8's Matt Wright that Johnson was pronounced dead just before 4 p.m.

He was on suicide watch at the time of his death and was alone in his cell. Officials said he died of an apparent suicide.

Now, both the Erie Police Department and the Erie County District Attorney are investigating.

Earlier this week, Johnson was arrested in Erie after he allegedly abducted his girlfriend, Brandi Shakir, from Oakwood Village and set her mother's home on fire.

While in Erie, Johnson broke into a random home and hid Shakir in the basement.

He then beat the homeowners until a neighbor heard screaming. The neighbor shot and injured Johnson and called police.

Kum Miller, one of the homeowners, passed away from her injuries in an Erie, Pennsylvania hospital early Saturday.

Kyle Johnson was charged with criminal homicide for Miller's death on Saturday.

There were additional charges pending in Ohio as well.

Shakir returned to be with her family on Thursday.
