BAY VILLAGE, Ohio -- The Bay Village Fire Department pulled a kayaker from Lake Erie early Tuesday morning.

The rescue happened off the coast near the Bay Boat Club in Bay Village around 4:15 a.m.

The U.S. Coast Guard along with firefighters from several nearby departments provided mutual aid.

According to the Bay Village Fire Department, the call came in around 3:45 a.m. from someone who heard a man in the water calling for help.

When firefighters arrived, they could hear the man, but due to fog, couldn't see him.

Two firefighters from Bay Village went out in a rescue boat and pulled the kayaker from the water. He was not wearing a life jacket.

The man, who was in his 20s, was taken to a nearby hospital. His condition was unknown Tuesday morning.

It's unclear why he was in the water at 4 a.m. and what caused him to fall out of his kayak. Waves at the time were reported to be two feet or less.
