CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The man found dead at Edgewater Park on Thursday morning has been identified.

According to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office, the man is 55-year-old Laurence Thomas.

Thomas was reported missing by his family back in late January. They told police it was unusual for him to not show up for work.

“It’s surreal, he wasn’t a swimmer and it was January,” said Pamela Thomas-Meyers.

Pamela says her brother was a hardworking and kindhearted person, and their ailing mother’s primary caregiver.

He would often take his mother to the lake at Edgewater Park and the two would sit and watch the waves for hours.

Officials say his body was found by a few people walking along the beach just before 9 a.m. Thursday.

When they spotted the body, it was about 100 yards off shore and they called police.

When police arrived, the body was roughly five yards off shore.

His cause of death has not been determined.
