Two women dead, suspect hurt in shooting at Chagrin Falls retirement community

CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio-- Two people are dead following a shooting at a retirement community in Chagrin Falls.

It happened at about 8:30 a.m. at an independent living building in Hamlet Village on Hamlet Hills Drive.

Chagrin Falls police said all three people involved were employees of Hamlet Village. Two females, Terri Treadway, 58, of Chardon and Catherine Sutter, 58, of Burton were killed.  The women were housekeepers at the facility. The suspect was a chef at Hamlet Village.

His identity has not been released.  He is being treated at an area hospital for his injuries. Police said it's unclear how the suspected shooter was injured and couldn't specify the nature of his injuries.

Police do not know the relationship between the victims.

"This is the last thing in the world I would have expected, the absolute last," Chagrin Falls Mayor Bill Tomko said, adding he can't recall any shootings in the typically quiet suburb in decades.  "Trying to explain an irrational act with rational thought, you never can do that. This is the ultimate irrational act," Tomko said.

Chagrin Falls Police Sgt. Kimberley Libens said investigators were conducting interviews and did not release a motive for the shootings.

Hamlet Village including independent living apartments and single family homes. There is public access to the area, and no pass codes or keys are required to get into the affected building.

Anyone concerned about loved ones are asked to Hamlet Village, not the police department.

Police said at least 8 different jurisdictions, including BCI and FBI and ATF agents assisted in response to the shooting and the investigation.

The Chagrin Falls Exempted Village School District is on spring break, but staff at the intermediate school were evacuated out of caution, said superintendent Robert Hunt.
