KISSIMMEE, Fla.– A young baseball fan was nearly hit in the face with a bat at a spring training game over the weekend.

The bat went flying into the stands during Saturday’s game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Atlanta Braves. One fan reached out to stop it from hitting the kid, who appeared to be looking down at his phone at the time.

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review photographer Christopher Horner captured the close call and posted these photos on Twitter.

Incidents like this sparked changes in Major League Baseball’s policy on netting in ballparks. The MLB now recommends teams extend nets near the ends of both dugouts.

The Pirates won, 9-6.
