Police to I-Team: Teen shot himself in leg after firing at officers

CLEVELAND -- A teenager was taken to the hospital after shooting himself in the leg while trying to get away from police.

Police sources told I-Team reporters Peggy Gallek and Ed Gallek that an unidentified 16-year-old fired shots at the Cleveland Police Fourth District headquarters on Kinsman Road just before 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. Two officers were sitting in a patrol car with the lights on when the shots were fired.

Cleveland Police said the officers spotted the teen running from a nearby gas station.

The officers chased him on foot and caught him on nearby Carton Avenue.

Police said the suspect gave conflicting statements about how he sustained his injury.

They believe it was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his thigh.

The teen is confined at University Hospitals where he is being treated. His condition is unknown.

 

The I-Team reports at least two bullets hit the Fourth District headquarters on Kinsman Road.
