JACKSON CENTER, Ohio – The Jackson Center police chief, Joseph Cotterman, has been indicted for gross sexual imposition.

He has worked for the Jackson Center Police Department, in Shelby County, since 2002.

According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, the 19-year-old victim told her mother she was sexually assaulted on January 27 and they reported it that night.

The victim said that the assault happened while Cotterman was on duty. Cotterman denied all allegations when he was interviewed the night of the alleged assault.

Shelby County Sheriff John Lenhart said “a certain amount of trust dies with the community” when charges like this are brought on someone who works as a police officer.

His bond was set at $5,000 and he bonded out on Thursday.

His next court appearance has not been set
