CLEVELAND - The first uterus transplant in the nation was performed on Wednesday at the Cleveland Clinic.
The surgery took about nine hours, according to the hospital.
The recipient, a 26-year-old woman, is currently in stable condition following the surgery.
The uterus came from a deceased organ donor.
The Cleveland Clinic said they began screening candidates for the transplant last year. Eligible candidates had to have Uterine Factor Infertility, a condition that effects 3-5% of women worldwide.
