2 Akron officers hurt when stolen van hits police SUV

AKRON, Ohio — Two Akron officers received minor injuries after the driver of a stolen van crashed into their cruiser.

According to the Akron Police Department, it happened around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. Officers Karl Lessmann III and William Culver were working in a marked police SUV at the time when they responded to reports of shots fired in the 1100 block of Keys Place.

They were driving south on South Arlington Street when the driver of a stolen Dodge Caravan pulled out westbound from Georgia Avenue and hit the cruiser. The driver of the Dodge Caravan fled on foot.

The officers were taken to Akron General Medical Center.

Lessmann III was treated for head and hand injuries, and Culver was treated for a cut to the lower lip and for knee injuries. They were treated and released from the hospital.

The Dodge Caravan was reported stolen out of Cuyahoga Falls. There is no description of the suspect.

The accident remains under investigation.
