CHESTER TWP., Ohio -- A man was critically injured trying to save a dog from a fire at a Chester Township home early this morning.
According to Chester Township Fire Chief John Wargelin, he is doing better and expected to survive.
Hamden Township Fire Chief Scott Hildenbrand said the fire broke out at around 4:30 a.m. at the home in the 12800 block of Wellswood Trail.
Hildenbrand said the man and a woman were able to get out of the home after it caught fire, but the man went back inside to get the dog.
The man suffered burns and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
The dog did not survive.
Firefighters are not yet sure of a cause. When they arrived, the home was engulfed.
Crews from 12 departments were on scene. They were hindered by water availability because there were no hydrants near the home. Water was brought in with tankers.
