CLEVELAND– United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio Steven M. Dettelbach will step down from his position next month.

Dettelbach submitted his resignation to President Barack Obama and Attorney General Loretta Lynch. It’s effective Feb. 5 and he will return to private practice.

“Serving as the United States Attorney, and leading and working with the incredible men and women of this office and so many law enforcement agencies, has been the single greatest honor of my professional life,” Dettelbach said in a news release on Wednesday. “I want to thank President Obama for affording me that rare opportunity. I hope that in the future I can both serve my clients well and remain an active part of this incredible community through public service.”

Dettelbach prosecuted Antun Lewis for a Cleveland house fire that claimed the lives of eight children and one adult. He also negotiated an agreement to reform the Cleveland Division of Police.
