CRYSTAL RIVER, Florida – Police found a 3-year-old boy driving down a Florida highway in a motorized toy car on Wednesday.
Officers responded to the 911 call after the toddler was seen trying to enter traffic on a major highway, according to ABC News.
When police arrived, several cars had blocked the child in who was still sitting inside the toy car.
A Citrus County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson told ABC News the child had cut through several yards to get to the freeway, traveling about 500 yards from his house.
A good Samaritan covered the child with a blanket as temps were in the 50s and he was only wearing a shirt and diaper.
The boy’s father said he went to use the restroom while the boy must have climbed onto a chair to unlock their front door.
When the father left the restroom, he couldn’t find the boy and saw the door open. He got onto his bike to begin looking for the child. Both made it home safely.
The Department of Children and Families is now investigating.
