CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Some accused smash-and-grab thieves were caught red-handed Wednesday morning by a police officer on routine patrol.

The officer was driving by a Rite Aid at the corner of East 55th Street and Superior Avenue when he saw a van smash into the front window of the store.

The three people inside the van jumped into a getaway car and took off, heading north on East 55th Street and turning onto Spencer Avenue. They got out and ran, but police set up a perimeter from St. Clair Avenue to Superior Avenue.

Shortly after, the three suspects were in custody.

The incident is still under investigation.
