PHOENIX, Ariz. — A family nearly missed being able to attend their father’s funeral — but they got to say goodbye after all thanks to the heartwarming act of a Delta pilot.

Fox 10 Phoenix reports that the Short family was on their way from Phoenix to Tennessee to bury their father, who had passed away from cancer.

They had an unexpected 90-minute delay taking off, so they had less than 10 minutes to get a connecting flight in Minneapolis. The flight was the last going to Memphis, Tenn., that day.

When they reached their gate in Minneapolis, the plane was taxiing toward the runway.

The family was devastated. The father began crying and waving his hands in the window in an attempt to get the pilot’s attention.

The pilot spotted him, and knew what he had to do.

He told Fox 10 he didn’t need to hear words because he could see the devastation on the family’s faces.

He turned the plane around and picked the family up.
