Nearly 82 percent of Americans say gift cards are “too impersonal.”

But the trend still continues to grow.

According to a recent study, more than 75 percent of customers have given a gift card over the last year. Last year, $124 billion was spent on gift cards alone.

CEB TowerGroup estimates that $750 million in gift cards were not redeemed last year.

Many say gift cards are thoughtless, while others say they like the flexibility they offer so their loved ones can get exactly what they want.
