HOLDEN, Mass.– A blind, elderly dog is now safe after rescuers pulled him from a well more than 25 feet deep.

The dog, now named Christmas, spent weeks, possibly months, trapped in the hole near Holden, Massachusetts.

“Surprisingly, the dog is in fairly good, physical condition,” said Laura Simpson, founder of the Harmony Fund, according to ABC News. “The blindness of course is from a pre-existing condition, but he’s now in foster care and we’re hoping he can find a home there he’s loved and respected in the way he should be.”

Simpson said local children had been feeding the pooch while he was stuck.

Authorities don’t know if Christmas fell in while looking for food or was thrown into the well.
