CLEVELAND -- When a vehicle crashed into a Cleveland police cruiser and then took off early Friday morning, a critical piece of evidence may have been left behind.

A license plate found on the street is believed to belong to the vehicle that left the scene.

The crash happened around 3 a.m. at the intersection of Payne Avenue and E. 40th Street.

Two officers were inside the cruiser when it was hit. They were checked out by Cleveland EMS but did not appear to have suffered any serious injuries.

Investigators say they are looking for a vehicle with heavy front-end damage.
