MARYLAND — A new bride from Maryland has gotten some attention online after presenting her father with a ‘certificate of purity’ on her wedding day, keeping a promise she made as a 13-year-old.

The bride, Brelyn Bowman, the certificate was signed by her doctor certifying that she was a virgin.

Brelyn’s father, Mike Freeman, told BuzzFeed the presentation happened during the wedding reception while the bride and her new husband, Timothy, were speaking. Brelyn stopped the reception and called him up.

“I was totally unaware of what was about to take place,” he told BuzzFeed. “During the remarks, she shared that she wanted to honor me by not allowing any man to touch her before her husband.”

Freeman said that all of his children signed “covenants” to save themselves for marriage.

Since Brelyn’s original post about the certificate, the story has prompted criticism about what she did along with some praise.

One commenter on her post said:

“Proving that in today’s society, a woman’s body does not belong to her, but men…father, husband, etc. I’m a strong advocate to be celibate or sexually liberated, but when it’s for YOU …..not your dad. This is creepy and reeks of patriarchy.”

Another commenter said:

“Some may disagree, but I’m proud of [her]. She makes me wish I would have waited…her gown and wedding was so beautiful….contrats Mrs. Bowman.”
