Community mourns 10-year-old Canton girl who died from heart condition

CANTON, Ohio- A Stark County community is in shock following the sudden passing of a 10-year-old girl.

Delaney Riley, a fifth-grade student at Glenwood Intermediate School in Plain Township, passed away on Wednesday at Akron Children’s Hospital. The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office said she died of natural causes and suffered heart abnormalities.

Delaney’s father, Craig Riley, is a Canton police officer.

The Plain Local School District released the following statement:

“We have experienced tragedy this week losing 5th grade student, Delaney Riley unexpectedly to natural causes. Our main goal is the well being of our young students who are grieving, many for the first time. Grief counselors have been made available to our students and will continue to be available as long as our students need it. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Riley family during this very difficult time. We are a family at Plain Local and when someone is hurting we rally together to support one another.”

On Monday, there will be a candlelight vigil in Delaney’s memory at Schneider Park in Canton at 7 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to wear green and pink in the little girl’s honor.
