SABULA, Iowa -- A swarm of mayflies covered a bridge, shutting it completely down Saturday night in Sabula, Iowa.

WQAD reports that Teena Frazen shot video of the swarm of what may have been millions of mayflies. At the time, she was riding with her son, Stephen Thayer, a reserve officer with the Sabula Police Department.

"Biggest thing I noticed was after cars were stopped and sitting for so long while we're trying to get cars moving again is they were probably piled knee high in front of their headlights from just sitting there," he said.

The Iowa Department of Transportation actually had to respond with a snow plow to move the bugs.

The road and bridge are now back open, but the lights have been turned off to help keep the bugs away.
