OREGON — An Oregon man has created a beautiful tribute to his dog, Denali, who was living out the last days of his life after helping his owner beat cancer.

Photographer Ben Moon won awards for the short film, which went viral this week.

Today reports that Denali was two months old when Moon adopted him from an animal shelter in 1999.

“As soon as I passed him, he put his paw out, cocked his head and kind of looked at me,” Moon told Today. “He tore a lap around the room, and then laid on my feet, and rolled up on his back, and looked at me. It felt like he chose me.”

After that, they were inseparable. When Moon was diagnosed with cancer in 2004, he said Denali helped him recover. He was able to visit Moon in the hospital, and Moon said Denali was incredibly gentle and aware of his master’s condition.

As Denali got older and close to the end of his life, Moon decided to make the tribute.

One month after he finished it, Denali passed away — on Feb. 2, 2014.
