CLEVELAND-- Fire destroyed a legendary hot dog business, Steve's Lunch, on Lorain Ave. in Cleveland. Crews received the call around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday when a worker reported seeing smoke.
Cleveland Division of Fire spokesperson Larry Gray told FOX 8's Suzanne Stratford that it was a fully-involved fire when crews arrived on the scene and that a part of the building collapsed.
Officials said the business was open, but empty, at the time of the fire. A building next door was evacuated; no one was injured.
One of the owners of Steve's Lunch, Ed Salzgeber, told Suzanne that the neighborhood staple has been in business since 1955; he has owned it with someone else since 2002.
Suzanne said that people who heard of the fire showed up at the scene in tears.
Catherine Harrison and her husband own 'Klein Radiator,' a business two doors down from Steve’s Lunch that was also threatened by the heat and flying embers. She was in tears and said, “All I can do is commend the Cleveland Fire Department for being (choking back tears)…you know, they saved our business.”
An also teary-eyed Rebecca Heilman, former employee, said, “Everybody would just come in, our regular customers-- you’d get to know them. Everyone was so friendly; I loved that place.”
Salzgeber has thanked everyone for their support. He did not yet know if they'll rebuild.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
