PAINESVILLE, Ohio – Mother Nature has sent us some lovely weather these past few days, but just in case you were a little suspicious of her (and after this winter, who wouldn’t be?), we can always turn to the animal kingdom to prove that spring is, indeed, coming to Northeast Ohio.

This picture was taken at Lake Metroparks, and according to the experts there, it is a sure sign that spring weather is on the way. The holes in this tree are the work of a pileated woodpecker (yes, the woodpecker that Woody the Woodpecker is based on). He was obviously a very busy woodpecker, judging by the size of the holes. Pileated woodpeckers craft these holes in early spring as nests. Their mating season starts next month.

So take heart, if the woodpeckers are building their warm weather homes, spring is surely on the way!
