ROCHESTER, Minn. — The tragic death of one college student meant life for a Vietnam War veteran fighting to stay alive.

Veteran Tom Meeks was diagnosed in 2011 with a rare heart condition called amyloidosis, according to KARE 11. He was told he would die unless he had a transplant, and he waited nearly three years for the procedure.

That’s when Matthew Heisler, 21, passed away in a house fire. He’s signed up to be on organ donor when he was 16, and Meeks was chosen to receive his heart.

Eight months after they lost him, Heisler’s mother, father and sister met with Meeks and listened to Heisler’s heart beating in his chest.
