CANONSBURG, Pa. – A room erupted in cheers when a couple announced they were having a baby girl, but then shock and confusion took over when they realized something wasn’t right.
Natalie and Ben Bell invited family to their Canonsburg, Pa. home earlier this month for a gender reveal party.
Not even the mom- and dad-to-be knew what they were having. They got two sealed envelopes from their ultrasound that said the baby's sex. They gave one to the bakery (which they later got back), and kept the other. The Bells asked for pink or blue icing in the middle of a cake to indicate a girl or boy.
When Natalie and Ben went to cut the cake, the moment was a big one. The baby is their first and also the first grandchild on both sides of the family. Video was rolling to capture the memory.
“It’s a girl!” Ben yelled when he saw the pink icing.
The room roared with excitement, but moments later, they made a shocking discovery.
Both envelopes from the ultrasound said boy!
“Pure confusion!” Natalie said. “Everyone was in shock that this happened! Lots of pictures were taken in that moment. No one could believe it!”
The video shows Natalie gripping the counter for support, not knowing what to think. Once reality set in, another announcement came.
“It’s a boy!”
More cheering followed as Natalie tried to process what happened. There was some sort of mix-up at the bakery. She wasn't having a girl, she was having a boy.
Though the couple didn't have a preference for what the baby would be, the few minutes that followed the cake cutting sent them through a range of emotions.
“I keep explaining it as an out of body experience. The video is truly the only way I can see what actually happened because I think I was in shock!” Natalie told Fox 8 News. “This is the stuff you joke about with people ... I didn't think it ever actually happened to anyone! My body language in the video says it all.”
The baby boy is due in March. You have to wonder what his reaction will be when he watches video of the surprising reveal someday.
