CHESTER TWP., Ohio — The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office says a suspect is in custody in the stabbing and assault of a 93-year-old Chester Township woman.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies responded to the woman’s home in the 5400 block of Bates Road shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday. When they arrived, she described the suspect as a young white male who was driving a red vehicle.

She said he’d come to the door asking for gasoline, and when she told him she didn’t have any, he attacked her. The victim said the man was holding a stick-like object.

The victim was taken to a local hospital, where she was being treated for her injuries.

At around 7:30 p.m., authorities announced the suspect the victim had described had been taken into custody. His name and photo are not yet being released. It’s not clear if he has been officially charged.

Authorities said in a statement issued Saturday afternoon: “We feel that this suspect may have targeted other homes in the area. If you have had a stranger come to your door recently asking for gas, directions or any other story please call 330-287-5701 and share your information.”
