CLEVELAND — Who will it be: Johnny Manziel or Brian Hoyer?

Browns Coach Mike Pettine told reporters on Tuesday’s conference call that the team is not in a position right now to make a decision on who will start the Sept. 7 opener in Pittsburgh.

The decision could come after the Browns third preseason game at home on Saturday against the Rams.

Pettine needed Brian Hoyer, the incumbent starter to have a strong game to make the decision easier.
However, both Hoyer and rookie Johnny Manziel did not play well. That has muddled up the decision process.Pettine allowed that other factors contributed to the poor QB play. The receivers did not run proper routes at times and effort could have been stronger.Pettine said he wants to make the right choice. He wants “to get it right, be diligent, do the right thing” and said he doesn’t want to make a choice just to make one.

Manziel made a raised middle finger gesture towards the Redskins bench that could result in a fine. Pettine said the gesture will be part of the decision-making process. He allowed that he was “extremely disappointed” and that his staff will address it with Manziel. The rookie more than likely could hear from the NFL.
