MENTOR, Ohio-– Mentor Police are searching for a group of men involved in a distraction burglary.

It happened Thursday at a home off Broadmoor Road in Mentor.

Lieutenant Tim Allen said two men tricked the homeowners into thinking they were tree cutters with a private company.

He said they asked the women to go into their backyard where they continued talking with them. All the while, two other men were inside the home looking for valuables.

The men got away with all kinds of jewelry.

During the investigation, police learned a little bit more about the suspects, and it’s all thanks to surveillance video from a gas station across the street.

"We were able to find through video from across the street that there were four males involved. The first two went in and then shortly after that, two other males got out of the SUV and went into the house,” said Lt. Allen.

This case isn't unique to the area. He said these kinds of situations are becoming more frequent and not just in Mentor, but everywhere.

"This is a pretty common tactic, this distraction type of burglary, so people just need to be aware of it and not let them pull you out of your house,” he said.
