A mother living in New York has sparked a parenting conversation about supervision and independence.
Lizzie Heiselt wrote an essay posted on babble.com entitled, “Yes, My 7-Year-Old Is Old Enough To Stay Home Alone.”
In the article, Heiselt outlines her decision-making process on whether she should comply with her son’s requests to stay at home while she runs neighborhood errands.
She reviewed state laws and learned New York does not dictate how old a child must be to be left alone. She also consulted with a psychology professor.
Ultimately she decided her “bookish homebody” son was responsible enough to wait at home for short periods of time.
