Browns confident despite Josh Gordon’s suspension looming
BEREA, Ohio — Day two of Browns training camp is in the books in Berea, and you’re starting to get the sense offensively that if and when Josh Gordon is suspended, for any length of time, that the pieces are in place for this offense to be competitive.
With a possible suspension looming for wide receiver Josh Gordon, Browns General Manager Ray Farmer is confident in the wide receivers who will need to step up if Gordon has to step away.
“There are names that you will recognize, there are some other guys you won’t recognize, for me it comes down to when you look at what guys do it’s when they get an opportunity to play, will they play well, nobody knew Miles Austin until Miles Austin got his opportunity,” Farmer said.
Nate Burleson has shared the field with top-notch receivers like Randy Moss and Calvin Johnson, but believes the receiving core the Browns have, minus Josh Gordon, is one of the better receiving cores he’s played with.
“As a whole, I think we got some pieces to the puzzle that can be really powerful,” Burleson said. “We have some guys that can go up and get it. Miles is a beast, he looks like a linebacker, and he’s fast, and he’s strong, and he snatches everything.”
The play-making doesn’t stop there. The Browns potentially have that one-two punch with running backs Ben Tate and Terrance West. While the Browns won’t be strictly a ground-and-pound style team, they should be able to keep defenses in check.
“In this league, you always need more than one guy,” said Tate. “We may even need three guys, so it all depends on how we come together offensively, that could start out as our plan but we may have three wide receivers who come from nowhere.”
Offensive lineman Jason Pinkston is unavailable to practice per head coach Mike Pettine who would not offer any more information on Pinkston’s status. Pettine said there is a possibility he could return to the team at some point.
