CLEVELAND — Yankees starter Shane Greene flirted with a no hitter in leading the Bronx Bombers to a 5-3 win over the Indians in game one of their 4-game series Monday night at Progressive Field.

Tribe starter Justin Masterson only lasted 2 innings in taking the loss.

New York took a 1-0 lead in the  top of the second inning on a Brian Roberts double. They added 2 more runs on a Brett Gardner single and a bases loaded walk by future Hall of Famer Derek Jeter.

Two more runs in the 3rd staked Greene to a 5-0 lead.

Cleveland’s Nick Swisher hit a solo homer with two outs in the 5th to break up Greene’s no hit bid.  Greene went 6 innings and allowed four hits and two runs.

Asdrubal Cabrera singled in a run in the 6th and Yan Gomes made it a 5-3 game in the 8th with a solo homer, his 11th roundtripper of the year.

Cleveland had a man on board in the ninth but could not even up the game.

Final: 5-3, New York.

Game two is Tuesday night at Progressive Field.
