Police in North Carolina are investigating the murder of Margaret Daniels, 31.

Authorities said she was found dead in her apartment over the weekend; there was no sign of forced entry and no foul play in the days before her murder.

Daniels, who was from Lakewood, moved to Newton, North Carolina where she built a life as a high school educator.

Known as Maggie to her friends, the avid runner and athlete also coached basketball for some time.

Maggie's friends in Northeast Ohio told FOX 8 News that they're devastated. They said Maggie was a fun-loving, energetic and kind person.

Daniels graduated from Notre Dame College in 2005. The school released the following statement:

"The Notre Dame College community mourns the loss of Margaret 'Maggie' Daniels ’05. Daniels, formerly of Lakewood, Ohio, is known to many in the College community as a former English and  Integrated Language Arts degree student. She was also a member of the women’s basketball team and ranks among program leaders in playing time and some scoring categories.

Daniels worked as counselor at Discovery High School in Newton, North Carolina, for the past year, and prior to that was an English teacher and basketball coach at Newton Conover High School. She was recognized as teacher of the year several times during her career.

Please keep Maggie and her family and friends in your thoughts and prayers."
