BAY VILLAGE- A father of four is being mourned by family and friends after he died saving a young woman at Huntington Beach.

According to his family, 43-year-old Peter Radke, of Medina, was attending a birthday party at Huntington Beach with three of his children when he spotted the troubled swimmer around 6 p.m. Saturday.

Witnesses say Radke was able to reach the victim and push her to safety, so others could pull her from Lake Erie.

Radke went missing in the water and a search team was called out to find him.

Bay Village police said he was found shortly after 9:15 p.m. Saturday in shallow water. The female was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Information regarding her condition is not yet available. Police are calling the man a hero.

“This man is a hero. He went into help a young woman and lost his life in the process,” said Chris Lyons, who is the Bay Village Fire Chief.

Crews from 11 agencies were part of the search. At least three boats and a helicopter also assisted.

Radke’s family released the following statement Sunday, “Words cannot express the profound sorrow we feel over the death of our beloved Pete. He was dedicated to serving God and anyone in need. While we never expected to lose him so soon, we take comfort in knowing Pete’s final moments were spent saving the life of another. Peter Todd Radke, devoted husband and father of four, would have had it no other way.”
