Man Killed When Car Leaves Road, Hits Tree

THOMPSON TWP., Geauga Co. — A Rome man was killed in a one-vehicle crash in Thompson Township early Sunday.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, it happened just before 12:30 a.m. on state Route 86 just south of state Route 166.

A 1988 Honda Accord was traveling northwest on state Route 86 when it failed to negotiate a curve in the road. The car crossed over the centerline, off the left side of the road and hit a tree.

The car was being driven by Michael T. Smith, 26. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was not wearing a safety belt.

Police say speed may be a factor in the crash, but it is still under investigation.
