Former Canton McKinley football coach Thom McDaniels is returning to the school where he attained glory in the past.

The Bulldogs are hiring McDaniels, who coached the Bulldogs to a state title in 1997.

A Monday night Board of Education meeting will make the hire official as the board is expected to approve the hiring.

McDaniels will replace Todd Filtz, who held the position for two seasons.

A total of 134 of his 204 career wins came at the helm of the Bulldogs.

McDaniels, the father of Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, also was head coach at Warren Harding and Massillon Jackson. More recently he was an assistant at Solon high, coaching the quarterbacks.

McDaniels spent the 2013 season away from high school football and missed it greatly.

“Football has pretty much been my identity and our identity as a family. I missed that immensely. That ability to impact everybody is the magnet that drew me back,” said McDaniels in a news release sent out by the Canton City School district.
