LeBron James May Attend Ilgauskas Ceremony Saturday
Former Cavalier forward LeBron James might be among the thousands at Quicken Loans Arena this Saturday night when the team retires the #11 jersey of Zydrunas Ilgauskas.
“I want to be there, but we’ll see. I’m not sure just yet,” James said. “I think it’s going to be a great day for my friend, a dear friend of mine. I’m excited for him.”
James, who was speaking to reporters prior to the Heat’s Monday night affair, has a schedule this week that would allow him to be in Cleveland for the ceremony. Miami is off Friday and Saturday before taking on the Bulls in Chicago on Sunday.
The 7′ Lithuanian holds a special spot in James’ heart. Z taught the highly-touted Cav the ropes when he came straight from Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School to the pros in 2003. All told, James and Ilgauskas played 8 seasons together; 7 in Cleveland and one in Miami.
The worst thing that could happen with a James visit would be for his presence to take away from his longtime friend’s big night. No telling how fans might react, seeing the man who bolted Cleveland with his famous “Decision” television show in 2010, courtside, watching the banner raised to the roof of the “Q”.
“It’s not my day. It’s not about me. It’s about Z. But it wouldn’t matter to me. Obviously, I’m there for a dear friend, to be able to support him. If I’m able to make it, and that’s the main thing.”
James may have been carrying the good vibes of his friendship with Z on Monday night. Not long after he spoke to the media about Z, he went out and scored 61 points, a career high against the Charlotte Bobcats.
