CLEVELAND — The man accused of shooting a mother and daughter, killing the girl, was in court Thursday morning.

Judge Charles Patton Jr. set bond for Geoffrey Gurkovich at $5 million and ordered no contact with any witnesses.

Gurkovich, 32, was charged with aggravated murder in the death of Jermani Brooks, 5.

He’s accused of firing into the SUV she, her mother, and two other children were sitting in on Crossburn Avenue in Cleveland Sunday night.

Noni Brooks, 33, was also shot.  The two other children weren’t hurt.

Prosecutors said Thursday Noni Brooks lost the use of her right eye and her left eye is swollen shut.

She was recovering at MetroHealth Medical Center and was listed in good condition at last check.

Investigators say the Brooks family was not the intended target of the shooting.

“The girlfriend of the suspect had some type of verbal altercation with a male. The suspect went looking for this particular individual, knew where they lived or where they would be, decided to get out of his vehicle, fired numerous rounds,” said Cleveland Police Chief Michael McGrath during a Tuesday afternoon news conference.

Gurkovich’s girlfriend told Fox 8 that he is innocent and would never even hurt a fly.

According to court documents, Gurkovich is no stranger to crime.

In 2002, he pleaded guilty to domestic violence. In 2003, he was convicted of felonious assault, unlawful restraint and domestic violence. He was also convicted of domestic violence in 2006, and pleaded guilty to charges including escape and domestic violence in 2009.

Fox 8 has obtained a letter that Gurkovich wrote to Cuyahoga Common Pleas Judge Kathleen Sutula in 2010 asking to be let out of prison early.

In it, he said, “I am very much ashamed of my conduct, and will do my best to improve myself in the future…if given the chance, I will not fail. I want more than anything to do the right thing.”

He goes on to say, “I will not let myself go back to my old ways.”

Gurkovich was not released early in that case.

In an earlier letter written in 2008, he said, “I have had a problem abusing substances for some time now” and “I am a father of three children.”

A vigil will be held for Jermani Thursday night, which would have been her sixth birthday.

A fund has been set up in her memory. Donations can be made at any KeyBank.

Tattoos have nothing to do with how a person conducts themselves. I know many kind hearted people who do many great things to help others that have tattoos.

This guy is simply a trashy, ignorant, hotheaded loser who cannot think beyond his actions to see the consequences.

Its apparent that he has an IQ of 2… but it takes 3 to grunt.I can’t wait to see him get whats coming to him. That poor little girl and her mom 😦

      • I have three 'Navy' tattoos and am OK

Some tattoos are representative of a sociopath’s die=rection in life. Sure, many tattooed people are normal, artsy, “different” folks. I would though state that most of the folks who have many tattoos are messed up in the head for sure.

Well ,lets see….in the articles I have read the mothers boyfriend was in the car too (apparently the intended target) plus 2 other children. One is an infant from the accounts I have read but I think the other one may be older? Anyway, the boyfriend is definitely a witness and its very possible that the police have other eye witnesses but are keeping their names out of the media.

I hope he receives the Death Penalty for what he did to that baby and her mother. He deserves it and his girlfriend deserves some type of punishment for instigating. It’s her fault in the first place.

Sounds like flies are the only ones safe from this guy.

I hope he gets the death penalty. The poor women has to suffer the rest of her life physically and mentally. And with the loss of her daughter that is just unbearable. That sweet girl was 5 years old. And she had her life taken because of some physco. Im sorry but he took the life of an innocent little girl and this man should never see his kids or the outside world again. He deserves to rot in the smallest hole until he dies.! As for the girlfriend she should be charged for something due to the fact she was cause to his outrageous act that led to the shooting and then to go on and say he would never hurt a fly yet has multiple DV on his record? Once a monster always a monster. He has no respect for anyone. Let him rot.
