CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A man was sentenced to 18 years in prison Thursday for the assault of a 91-year-old woman.
Thursday, Dean Murphy, 40, pleaded guilty to charges of burglary and felonious assault in the case.
He blamed the attack on drugs.
It happened last September. Carol Kurilec, 91, was watching TV when she heard someone in her kitchen. When she checked it out, she was attacked and beaten up by Murphy.
Kurilec suffered face and neck injuries and broken ribs. Pictures of her injuries were shown in court.
According to prosecutors, he left Kurilec bleeding on the kitchen floor as he robbed her of $131.
Murphy has a long criminal history, including of breaking into homes in Lorain and Cuyahoga counties.
He apologized to Kurilec in court and said he is addicted to heroin.
"I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me," Murphy said "I'm not making excuses, but heroin has had a tight grip on me. I hope that I can get the help that I can get. I'm sorry."
Kurilec wasn't forgiving.
"I just don't like that man, no how," she said. "I don't think he's recyclable. If I had my way, I would toss him in a trash can and nail it shut and have everybody on the street put a nail it and keep him there."
Murphy's family lives right down the street from Kurilec. Kurilec said she feels sorry for his family even though she doesn't know them.
