ELYRIA- It's a Lorain County school where "web" has nothing to do with the internet and no bullies are allowed.

That caring concept is one reason Eastern Heights Middle has been voted a FOX 8 Cool School.

It is an urban school in the Elyria City School District with a diverse student population and a diverse curriculum from Honors courses to classes for English language learners.

"The teachers try their hardest to keep every student doing the best they possibly can," Eighth Grader Caelab Oliver said.

Intervention Specialist Ben Lovati finds the students want to succeed.  “They try their hardest.  Some of them don't necessarily come from the easiest situations at home.  Yet, they are still here every day and trying, Lovati added.

Achieving in academics continues to be a top priority.  Eastern Heights has been rated effective for the past four years. Eighth Grader Alysa Higgins said they have really good teachers. “If they love what they do, we love learning from them.  So, I think that is very effective with our grades,” she said.

Eastern Heights has been the pilot school with programs like the Anti-Bullying Task Force and the W.E.B. program, which stands for Where Everybody Belongs.  “We just prevent bullying and we can stop it and make a difference because the people here are just making people feel better about themselves so they fit in more, " Eighth Grader Amber Wysocki said.

Eastern Heights was the first of the three Elyria Middle Schools to have sixth graders. Eighth graders serve as "web" leaders to make sure they feel they're part of the student body. "We do very fun -- sometimes educational activities with the sixth graders, we bond with them,” Eighth Grader Corde Barnes said.

Sixth Grader Molly Fenik said she was nervous coming into the middle school. “When we first came and we met our leaders and we played some fun stuff.  I said, OK, it's not so bad,” she said.

Eastern Heights Middle School has a steel drum ensemble that is not only unique to the Elyria City School District; it is the only steel drum band in Lorain County.
