WINDHAM TWP., OH – A man is accused of murdering his nephew on Christmas Day in Windham Township.

"Holiday crimes still occur, but it's a pretty sad scenario," Portage County Sheriff David Doak said.

It was just before 11 p.m. when they found Jason Canan, 39, dead at P & M Estates mobile home park. They arrested the victim's uncle and roommate, Joseph Thornton, 48.

"I can't believe somebody actually...they got shot right? I'm totally shocked," neighbor Marcy Gallo said.

"Officers went to the residence on a welfare check and were informed that perhaps there was someone in the residence who had been shot," Doak said. "We had information that there could be some involvement on his part, so the focus was on him immediately and we interviewed him."

Doak said Thornton was charged Thursday morning with his nephew's murder.

For now, deputies won't publicly reveal what they think happened because it's still an on-going investigation.

"We are not revealing lot of details regarding any of the circumstances involved right now,” Doak said.

Gallo said the mobile home park is normally safe and quiet.

"There are retired people, there are kids. Everybody is very friendly," Gallo said.

Neighbors said both men worked and kept to themselves.

Thornton is in jail without bond on a murder charge. He is scheduled to be arraigned Friday afternoon.
