FNTD Playoffs: Regional Final Scores
CLEVELAND – Week #13 of Friday Night Touchdown featured the Elite Eight in the OHSAA Football Playoffs, with 20 schools across Northeast Ohio playing for berths in the State Semifinals across the seven Divisions.
The top-seeded St. Edward (11-1) Eagles used a dominant defense to shutout previously undefeated Austintown-Fitch (12-1), 28-0.
St. Edward advances to the Region 1 Final next Saturday against Mentor (12-1), in a rematch from the 2012 Playoff classic, which the Cardinals won 63-56.
Mentor avenged a week #2 loss to St. Ignatius (8-5), in resounding fashion, 26-3.
Coach Steve Trivisonno’s Cardinals trailed 3-0 after the first quarter, before QB Conner Krizancic started running and throwing all over the Wildcats’ talented defense.
In Division V, Akron Manchester (11-2) crushed Crestview (11-2) 69-21.
The Panthers scored on their first six possessions and never looked back, running past the overmatched Rebels and into the State Semifinals against defending Division V Champion, Coldwater (11-2) a 60-13 winner over Huron (9-4).
Defending Division III State Champion St. Vincent-St. Mary (13-0) extended its winning streak to 19-games with a 40-7 victory over previously unbeaten Hubbard (12-1).
The Irish now advance to Division III Semifinals against Clyde (12-1) which pulled a huge upset, holding off the Defending Division II State Champion, Toledo Central Catholic (12-1), 42-41, thanks to a late fumble by Irish QB DeShone Kizer at the 2-yard line.
In Division II, Highland’s dream season continued. The top-seeded Hornets handed a tough Avon team its first loss of the season 24-21 in the Region 3 Final.
Avon finishes the season 12-1, falling just short of the school’s first State Title for the third straight year.
Highland (13-0) advances to play Glenville (12-1), a 40-7 winner over gritty Madison (10-3) in the Division II State Semifinals.
Six-time State Champion Benedictine (9-4) had won eight of its last nine games, but the Bengals wasted an an early 14-point lead against eight-time Champion Youngstown Cardinal Mooney (9-4) in the Region 11 Final.
Mooney ran off 28-unanswered points in the 2nd quarter and held off a late Benedictine rally to eliminate the Bengals 28-21.
In Division VI, Region 19, Kirtland (13-0) won for the 42nd time in the last 43 games, routing Mogadore (11-2), 45-7.
