‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Costing Library Lots of Green
CLEVELAND– E-copies of the popular book, ‘Fifty Shades of Grey‘, are costing the Cuyahoga County Public Library fifty shades of green.
“The library spent $23,000 for 780 copies of the ebook of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’,” said assistant marketing director, Robert Rua.
According to Rua, the publisher, Penguin Random House, set the price and the library must pay it.
“At the height of its popularity, the holds for this book here were in the hundreds. So, it was a title that customers really want; so we purchased enough copies to address that strong demand,” said Rua.
The $23,000 is really 0.02% of the $1 million ebook budget for the library.
But it does break down to almost $80 per ebook.
“Thus giving 780 customers the ability to check out that book at any given time. One customer can check out one ebook. There’s a misconception that the library buys one ebook and we can lend that one book out to everyone. It doesn’t work that way,” added Rua.
“It’s a good thing people are reading, maybe not necessarily that,” laughed Chimere Jackson of Parma.
“It’s a lot of money but I guess that is what sells nowadays. Sex sells!” added Bruce Brooks of Parma.
“We do our best to get the books that our customers want and to provide access to those books. And we do the best to make sure we have those materials for our customers; the one they are demanding,” added Rua.
