AVON, OH -- Residents in Lorain County are troubled by a shooting death that happened over the weekend.

Avon police tell FOX 8 News a man shot his roommate in the head. Many in the area of French Creek Road say the suspect and victim were best friends.

Several are wondering how something so horrible could happen to two friends.

Ryan Raider, 25, is in the Lorain County Jail, accused of shooting his roommate, Brandon Smith, 29, in the head.

The victim was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

"How would you live with that? I don't feel like I could do very well with that," said Randy Murphy, who lives next door to the men. "It just blew me away because I was like, it can't be real. They lived there together, they were fixing the house up."

Murphy Tells FOX 8 the two lived at the French Creek Road home for more than a year. He knew something was terribly wrong Saturday morning when he walked outside and saw authorities from Avon and Avon Lake swarming the home.

"I looked over to my left and I saw the police over there and I was like 'wow, what's going on,' you know?" he said.

Murphy explained that the neighborhood is typically quiet and everyone knows everyone. He said he is devastated knowing something so awful happened right next door.

"I know in my heart that was an accident, it had to be, because those guys were just great together, you never heard no arguing," Murphy said.

Avon police said the circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation, but it is believed that alcohol may have been a factor.

Raider is facing charges, including reckless homicide. His video arraignment is set for Tuesday morning.
